My name is John de Laeter and I am professor of Physics at Curtin University (West Australia) and also a committed Christian and I have never seen any conflict in my life between the demands, if you like of science and religion.
Experimental evidence in science indicates that the world is a rational place, that it has been designed and that means that there must be a creator and for me the creator of the universe is the God of the bible.
While scientists will accept the fact that the universe has been created, has been designed and Albert Einstein once said in fact that God does not play dice with the universe. Where as I might think that the creator is the God of the bible, many scientists find it very difficult to jump to the conclusion that the Son of God can be Saviour and Lord.
Science progresses in small steps by proving theories and hypotheses and that is done by experiments. Now if the experiment proves the theory and the theory therefore works, then one tends to accept it and to me Christianity is very much like that, it's a system that works. It not only gives a very rational explanation of mankind, of the way men and women do things, that sin is a reality and that forgiveness can work but it also has the power to change people's lives, can change my life.
Now the wonderful thing about Christianity is that it offers salvation free and without any strings attached. You don't have to win or earn your way into salvation, it's a great hope for the world and Christianity promises hope not only in this life but in eternity.
So I am a Christian because it works for so many people, it works for me and it seems to me that the overwhelming evidence is that Jesus Christ is a personal Saviour who can change one's life. |
