 Does Science discredit Christianity?

MIRACLES. Many people find it hard to understand how miracles can happen. If there is no God then miracles are a real problem but if God is the creator of the universe, creating time, matter, laws etc, then surely He is at liberty to interfere.

Millard J Erickson in his book "Christian Theology" pages 407 and 408 outlines three common views concerning miracles.

1. Miracles are manifestations of little or unknown natural laws and if we fully understood nature we could predict these events. Rare circumstances could combine to produce a miracle, for example, the miraculous catch of fish in Luke 5. Thus it would be more a matter of superior knowledge of Jesus rather than His power -  however this could not explain His other miracles.

2 Miracles suspend or break the laws of nature. Some believe that the weakness of this view is that it makes God work against himself i.e. the natural laws that He has made.

3. Miracles occur when natural forces are countered by supernatural forces. In this view natural laws continue to operate but a supernatural force is introduced negating the effect of natural laws.

EVOLUTION AND CREATION. Some people find the theory of evolution a stumbling block to Christian belief. It need not be so. Here are three common views held by Christians.

1. Young earth creationism where the chapters of Genesis are taken literally. God made the world in seven days probably less than 10,000 years ago. eg. www.creationscience.com

2. Old earth or progressive creationism. The days of creation are seen as long periods of time during which God progressively created major life forms leaving microevolution to produce minor variation. eg. www.arn.org

 3. Theistic evolution; in which God used the process of evolution to create all life.

All agree that God created the universe and every thing in it, including life. Why then are there different views? The Bible asserts that God created the universe but it is not absolutely clear on the details of how He did it.
